Central Valley of Chile
Great wines are the results of great grapes cultivated in the best terroir. It would be foolish to think that a unique vineyard, located in a single place could produce all the varieties at their very best. Each variety has special requests in terms of soil and climate. That is the reason why VIÑA MARTY have selected several vineyards in several valleys. They have been selected for the grape quality produced and this is why all of our wines show varietal character and excellence.
The vineyards are located in Maipo Alto, Colchagua, Curicó, and Maule valleys. Each of them has varieties that have been specifically adapted to the place. All together they are part of a main region called Central Valley which accounts for the majority of the Chilean wine production.
We are not producing wines only from Maipo or from Colchagua or from Maule. We are producing from all of them. We are producing complex wines. We represent excellence for each varieties. We are VIÑA MARTY'S wines.
It is important to mention that Chile has an ideal Mediterranean climate. Thanks to its unique geography, our country has natural barriers that protect the vineyards from diseases, creating a healthy environment for grape growing. These characteristics give us the advantage to grow different varieties in different terroirs such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenère, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. For these reasons, we are able to have our vines planted on their own rootstock which give us the advantage of drought resistance. This is very important since we are located in a hot and dry wine region.
Best known for red wines production due to its mild climate, it is the closest region to Santiago. Rocky alluvial soils are found here which are ideal for the red varietals we are growing in Maipo alto.
The mountains have an influence on the vineyard's microclimate due to the altitude, the cool breezes in the evenings that cool down the vineyard temperature, and a higher temperature oscillation between day and night time. These effects are reflected in the character and elegance of our wines.
This specific growing region is well known for producing the best Cabernets from Chile but it is also ideal for Syrah and Merlot.
Our Single Vineyard and Icon wines come from a small and unique 2 ha vineyard located at the foothills of the Andes, in Pirque, a terroir known for producing one of the finest Chilean red wines. Pirque is an exclusive Denomination of Origin that it is only comparable to what Pauillac is in the Medoc AOC and Bordeaux AOC.
The vineyard has a NW-SE orientation allowing the grapes to fully ripen during the growing season. It was planted in 1999 in a high density of 6,250 vines/ha. On average we are only harvesting less than 1 kilo per vine. With such a low yield, our Single Vineyard and Icon wines are only produced in limited quantities and therefore, they are very exclusive.
Just 180 km south of Santiago, Santa Cruz is a town located in the heart of Colchagua. We have selected a 17 ha vineyard, located in the center of the valley, in an area called La Patagua. These 65 year old vines produce excellent wines thanks to the small and thick skin berries found in Cabernet grapes. Wines from this vineyard come with a high concentration of colour and tannins, full-bodied, and with a distinctive flavour profile reflecting the varietal character of a Cabernet from Colchagua. Moreover, old vines are well recognized for producing high quality grapes since their yields are lower, producing less grapes and smaller berries which potentiate phenolic compounds concentration.
Climatic conditions in Colchagua are typical of a Mediterranean climate where rains are concentrated during the winter and the summer is dry and warm, allowing us to produce grapes in a perfect growing season.
Located 200 km from Santiago, our vineyard is in a specific zone called Teno. It has an ideal climate for both, red and white wine production, due to the coastal and Andes influence (perfectly suited for Sauvignon Blanc for example). Soils composition varies between clay, sand, and decomposed granite. As in Colchagua valley, together these soils allow for great water holding capacity, enabling the vines to survive the hot dry summers.
The vineyard was predominantly planted to Cabernet Sauvignon in 1999. These vines are meticulously care to produce the best possible fruit from this terroir.
Ideal for Cabernet, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay.
The Maule valley is the largest and one of the oldest valleys in Chile, located 250 km south from Santiago. Recently the Maule has experienced a renewal by introducing new varieties where Carmenère has been very successful producing fruit driven wines.
Our vineyard is located in a specific zone called Pencahue Valley. We have 26 hectares that were planted between 1997 and 2008, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, and Syrah.
This valley is well known for its dry-warm climate and rocky soils. At the same time, moisture is well retained by the soils due to the clay content, making this valley suitable for varieties that struggle under stressful conditions. It is an ideal place to produce full-bodied Syrah and Carmenère.
Casablanca and Leyda have a cool Mediterranean climate with maritime influence, due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. The grapes are grown on soils that are a mixture of clay and sand. It is very important to us to be able to grow grapes here to produce our Reserva and Gran Reserva white wines. These valley are famous for producing refreshing white wines with a crispy acidity.
In general, we source our Chardonnay from Casablanca and our Sauvignon Blanc from Leyda.
